Our aim is to provide a personalised curriculum in a therapeutic environment underpinned by the school’s core values:
Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Honesty &Trust (RICH-T).
We even have a school chimp called RICH-T who you will see dotted around our school promoting positive mental health messages and decision making skills.
Our values are important to us and they are at the heart of everything we do – we teach our pupils how to live by them and we ask them to hold us to account to them too! We believe it is important that we all practice what we preach!

This is reflected in our priorities for continuing to drive the school forward; including our inclusion & equality promise.
Our theoretical and values based philosophy aims to develop our pupil’s ability to manage their own behaviours and to help them take ownership of their actions and aspirations. We have a culture that is based on positive relationships; with our policies and systems drawn from relational practice and self-determination theory. We are a forward thinking, passionate team who believe in listening and talking and we are wholeheartedly here to help our pupils.
We are very much about personalised attainment – we understand that all of our pupils are different and we aim to provide a climate that is tailored to each of their individual needs. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that focuses on an ambitious blend of core and creative subjects. We assess the academic ability and social need of each pupil and ensure they are placed on the correct pathway to achieve their best possible outcomes – both socially and academically. These range from Early Entry Certificates, Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 and up to GCSE and equivalent qualifications – pupils can and have achieved GCSE level 7’s.
We are big believers in autonomy and we want our pupils to take ownership of their development; as such pupils have the option of studying various subjects in addition to those set out in the National Curriculum including: Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Construction, Photography, Hair and Beauty as well as Animal Care.
School Resources
To enhance our learning opportunities and increase engagement, we have a variety of resource rooms and additional spaces for intervention located all around school.
Here is a small sample of some of the environments in EWD School.
